Borough Council

New Salem has an elected 7-member Borough Council which plays a central role in borough government. Council sets policy, enacts legislation, adopts budgets, controls expenditures, appoints advisory commissions and boards, and hires employees. Council members are elected to four-year terms, with either 3 or 4 members up for election every 2 years.

Council elects a president, vice-president, and president pro tem from its ranks. The president, in coordination with council, appoints council committees and chairpersons, who are responsible for overall policy implementation.

Meeting Information

Notice is hereby given the New Salem Borough Council has approved the dates for its Planning Commission and Workshop meetings in 2026.  The Borough council meetings are public meetings and open to the public.  The meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Borough’s Municipal Building at 80 North Water St., York New Salem, PA, beginning at 7:00 PM unless changed at the call of the Council President or for lack of business.

Notice is hereby given the New Salem Borough Council has approved the dates for its regular meetings in 2026.  The Borough council meetings are public meetings and open to the public.  The meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month (except January) at the Borough’s Municipal Building at 80 North Water St., York New Salem, PA, beginning at 7:00 PM.  A second meeting is held on the second Tuesday of October to discuss the annual budget.  All meetings will be held unless adjourned to meet at another time or at the call of the Council President.
